expropriation

Government property seizure

Expropriation is the taking of private property by a government or authority, typically for public use.

Unlike outright seizure, expropriation usually involves compensation, though often below market value: The highway project required expropriation of farmland along the route.

The term also applies to nationalization of industries or foreign assets: expropriation of oil fields.

More loosely, any forcible transfer of property from one party to another.
