Soviet gulags
Forced labor camps
Soviet gulags were the network of forced labor camps operated by the Soviet Union from the 1930s through the 1950s, where millions of political prisoners, criminals, and perceived enemies of the state were imprisoned under brutal conditions.
Many died from overwork, starvation, and extreme cold.
The term now evokes any system of political imprisonment or forced labor: Critics compared the detention facilities to Soviet gulags.
