guardianship
Court-appointed care
Guardianship is the legal responsibility for caring for someone who cannot care for themselves—typically a minor child or an incapacitated adult.
A court grants guardianship when parents die, become unfit, or when adults lose capacity through illness or injury.
The guardian makes decisions about the ward's welfare, finances, or both: She was awarded guardianship of her nephew after the accident.
The term extends figuratively to any protective oversight: guardianship of democratic values.
