conservatorship

Legal protective arrangement

A conservatorship is a legal arrangement in which a court appoints someone to manage the affairs of another person deemed unable to do so themselves—typically due to age, illness, or disability.

The conservator may control finances, make medical decisions, or both.

Conservatorships are meant to protect vulnerable people but can become controversial when the person under protection disputes their incapacity: Britney Spears fought for years to end her conservatorship.

The term is roughly equivalent to guardianship, though usage varies by jurisdiction.
