legal guardianship
Court-granted parental authority
Legal guardianship is a court-appointed relationship in which one person assumes responsibility for another who cannot care for themselves—typically a minor child or an incapacitated adult.
The guardian makes decisions about the ward's living situation, medical care, and finances.
After her parents died, her aunt was granted legal guardianship.
Guardianship differs from adoption in that it doesn't permanently sever the biological parents' rights.
