fusiliers
Light flintlock troops
Fusiliers were originally soldiers armed with fusils—light flintlock muskets.
The term now survives mainly in the names of military regiments that preserve historical designations: the Royal Fusiliers, the Lancashire Fusiliers.
These units no longer carry distinctive weapons but retain the title as a matter of tradition and identity.
