cockade

Ribbon knot badge

A cockade is a rosette or knot of ribbons worn on a hat as a badge, typically indicating political affiliation, military rank, or membership in a faction.

The ornament was especially prominent in 18th- and 19th-century Europe, where different colors signaled allegiance: The revolutionary wore a tricolor cockade on his cap.

Now largely ceremonial or historical.
