levy

Government-imposed charge

A levy is a tax or other mandatory payment imposed by authority: a levy on imported goods, a property tax levy.

To levy is to impose such a charge, or to conscript troops: The government levied new taxes on luxury items.

By extension, levy can mean to wage or carry out: levy war against a neighboring state.

The word suggests official, compulsory collection rather than voluntary contribution. (Capitalized Levy is a surname.)
