kilobyte

Small file unit

A kilobyte is a unit of digital information, roughly a thousand bytes.

In computing contexts, it often means exactly 1,024 bytes (2¹⁰), while in storage marketing it typically means 1,000 bytes.

The discrepancy matters less as file sizes have grown—most files people encounter are measured in megabytes or gigabytes.

Abbreviated KB or kB.
