VHS tape
Obsolete recording medium
A VHS tape is a plastic cassette containing magnetic tape for recording and playing video, the dominant home video format from the early 1980s until DVDs displaced it around 2000.
The cassettes were bulky and degraded with repeated use, but they democratized home movie-watching and time-shifted television.
We have boxes of old VHS tapes in the attic.
Now largely obsolete, VHS tapes persist as nostalgic artifacts and in thrift stores.
