external drive

Detachable data device

An external drive is a data storage device that connects to a computer from outside rather than being installed internally.

External drives plug in via USB, Thunderbolt, or other cables, making them portable and easy to swap between machines: I keep my photo library on an external drive.

They're commonly used for backup, extra storage, or transferring large files.
