Records missed calls
An answering machine is a device that records voice messages from callers when a phone goes unanswered.
Before voicemail systems became standard, answering machines were standalone devices connected to landline telephones: I'll check the answering machine when I get home.
The term persists even for digital voicemail: Leave a message on my answering machine.
