bad sector
Unreadable disk area
A bad sector is a portion of a computer storage device—typically a hard drive—that has become permanently damaged and can no longer reliably store data.
Bad sectors develop from physical wear, manufacturing defects, or sudden impacts.
When a drive detects bad sectors, it marks them as unusable and routes data elsewhere: The diagnostic found several bad sectors on the old drive.
