turbofan

Aircraft propulsion system

A turbofan is a type of jet engine where a large fan at the front draws in air, with some passing through the combustion core and the rest bypassing it for additional thrust.

Turbofans are quieter and more fuel-efficient than pure turbojets, making them standard on commercial aircraft: The 737 is powered by two turbofan engines.
