shunter
Rail car mover
A shunter is a small locomotive used to move railway cars around a yard, coupling and uncoupling them to form trains.
The term is primarily British; Americans say switcher or switch engine.
By extension, a shunter is the railway worker who performs this task: The shunter waved the signal to proceed.
