turbojet

Compressor-driven aircraft engine

A turbojet is a type of jet engine that produces thrust by compressing air, mixing it with fuel, igniting the mixture, and expelling the hot gases at high speed.

It was the earliest form of jet engine used in aviation and powered the first generation of jet aircraft.

Turbojets are efficient at high speeds but have largely been replaced by turbofans in commercial aviation due to their noise and fuel consumption at lower speeds.
