runtime

Program's active phase

Runtime refers to the period when a computer program is actually executing, as opposed to when it's being written or compiled.

A runtime error occurs during this execution phase, not when code is being checked beforehand.

Runtime also names the software environment that supports program execution, handling memory and other resources: Java programs need the Java runtime installed.

In entertainment contexts, runtime simply means duration: The movie's runtime is two hours and fifteen minutes.
