diasporas

Communities living abroad

Diasporas is the plural of diaspora, which refers to a population scattered from its homeland.

The Jewish diaspora is the original and paradigmatic example—communities dispersed across the world while maintaining cultural and religious identity.

The term now applies broadly to any ethnic or national group living outside their ancestral territory: the African diaspora, the Armenian diaspora, the Irish diaspora.

Members of diasporas often preserve traditions, maintain ties to homeland, and form distinct communities in their adopted countries.
