aboriginals

Original regional inhabitants

Aboriginals are the original or earliest known inhabitants of a region, present before colonizers or later settlers arrived.

The term appears most often in reference to Indigenous Australians, though it can apply broadly: the aboriginals of North America.

In Canadian usage, Aboriginals traditionally encompassed First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples, though Indigenous is now preferred.

The word carries colonial overtones that make it contentious in some contexts.
