self-identification
Naming your identity
Self-identification is the act of declaring what group, category, or identity you belong to.
The term appears in contexts where people name their own race, gender, religion, or other characteristics rather than having others assign labels to them: The form asks for self-identification of ethnicity.
It can also mean recognizing yourself in a description: I felt a strong self-identification with the main character.
