demagnetize
Strip magnetic charge
To demagnetize is to remove or neutralize the magnetic properties of something.
Hard drives are demagnetized before disposal to destroy data.
A watch may need demagnetizing if it's been exposed to strong magnetic fields.
The process can be deliberate or accidental: The tape was demagnetized and the recording lost forever.
