phosphor

Radiation-activated light-emitter

A phosphor is a substance that glows when exposed to radiation or electron beams.

Television and computer screens once relied on phosphors coating the inside of cathode ray tubes—electron beams struck the phosphors, which emitted the light that formed images.

The term persists in display technology even as the underlying mechanisms have changed.

Phosphors also appear in fluorescent lighting and glow-in-the-dark materials.
