degauss

Neutralize magnetic field

To degauss is to remove or neutralize the magnetic field from something, typically an electronic device or metal object.

The term comes from the gauss, a unit of magnetic measurement named after mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss.

Older computer monitors and televisions had degauss functions to correct color distortion caused by magnetic buildup.

Ships are degaussed to protect them from magnetic mines.

The technician degaussed the old CRT monitor to fix the discoloration.
