praetorian
Elite Roman protectors
Praetorian refers to the Praetorian Guard, the elite bodyguard unit protecting Roman emperors.
The term now describes any powerful guard force protecting a leader, often with connotations of excessive influence or corruption—praetorian guards throughout history have been kingmakers and assassins as much as protectors.
The president surrounded himself with praetorian loyalists.
Also spelled pretorian.
