armadillo

Banded burrowing creature

An armadillo is a burrowing mammal native to the Americas, distinctive for its armor of bony plates covering its back and sides.

The nine-banded armadillo is the only species found in the United States, known for its habit of jumping when startled—unfortunately often into the undercarriage of passing vehicles.

Some species can roll into a ball when threatened.
