gauntlets

Medieval hand armor

Gauntlets are armored gloves, part of a knight's suit of armor protecting the hands and wrists.

The word extends to any heavy protective gloves: welding gauntlets, falconer's gauntlets.

To throw down the gauntlet is to issue a challenge, from the medieval custom of tossing one's glove to provoke a duel.

To run the gauntlet is to endure attacks from both sides—originally a military punishment where the condemned passed between two rows of soldiers who struck him as he ran.
