Golgotha

Jerusalem execution site

Golgotha is the site outside Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified, from an Aramaic word meaning "place of the skull." The name appears in the New Testament; the Latin equivalent is Calvary.

By extension, a golgotha is any place of suffering, sacrifice, or martyrdom: The battlefield became a golgotha for an entire generation.
