couplings

Links between parts

Couplings are devices or mechanisms that connect two things together, allowing them to work as a unit.

In machinery, a coupling joins rotating shafts: The engine connects to the transmission through a flexible coupling.

In plumbing and piping, couplings join sections of pipe.

Railroad cars connect via couplings.

The word also applies to sexual pairings, sometimes with clinical or disapproving overtones: The film depicted various romantic couplings.
