marshalling yards
Railcar sorting grounds
Marshalling yards are rail facilities where freight cars are sorted and assembled into trains.
Cars arrive on incoming tracks, get separated by destination, then roll down a slight incline onto classification tracks where they couple with other cars heading the same direction.
The process resembles mail sorting but with boxcars: The locomotive pushed cuts of cars over the hump into the marshalling yard.
Also called classification yards or switchyards.
