headframe

Mine elevator structure

A headframe is the tall structure standing over a mine shaft, supporting the pulleys and cables that raise and lower equipment and workers into the mine.

Also called a headgear or pithead frame.

These steel or timber towers are often the most visible feature of a mining operation: The abandoned headframe still dominates the skyline of the old mining town.
