conscripts
Mandatory military recruits
Conscripts are people compelled by law to serve in the military, as opposed to volunteers.
The term carries connotations of unwillingness or inexperience: an army of poorly trained conscripts.
To conscript is to draft someone into service.
The word extends beyond military contexts to forced participation generally: conscripted into helping with the move.
