flee

Leave in haste

To flee is to run away from danger or unpleasantness.

You flee a burning building, a war zone, or an uncomfortable conversation.

The past tense is fled: They fled the country when the regime changed.

Flee suggests urgency—you don't flee casually.

Things can also flee figuratively: All hope fled when we saw the damage.
