shanghai

Coerce into service

To shanghai someone is to coerce or trick them into doing something, originally to kidnap them for service as a sailor.

The term comes from the practice of drugging or forcing men aboard ships bound for Shanghai and other distant ports: They shanghaied him into joining the committee.

The word suggests being pressed into service against one's will. (Capitalized Shanghai is the Chinese city.)
