chain gang
Prisoners working together
A chain gang is a group of prisoners chained together while performing forced labor, typically outdoors—building roads, breaking rocks, or clearing land.
The practice was common in the American South through the mid-20th century and became a symbol of brutal penal conditions: He spent two years on a chain gang in Georgia.
