Put in sequence
Sort is a categorizing word, like kind and type: What sort of movies do you like?
In conversation, people use the vague adverb sort of to qualify or mitigate the meaning of an adjective: They seemed sort of angry.
All sorts of problems means a variety of problems, a lot of problems, or both of these.
To sort something is to assign it a category in a scheme; you might sort items alphabetically, chronologically, or based on shape.
