cowl
Monastic head covering
A cowl is a hood, especially the loose hood attached to a monk's robe.
The word extends to hood-shaped coverings generally: a chimney cowl directs airflow and prevents downdrafts; an engine cowl is the removable cover over an aircraft engine.
In knitting, a cowl is a tube of fabric worn around the neck like a hood that slipped down: She knitted a wool cowl for winter.
