soot

Flue's dark residue

Soot is the black powdery or flaky substance that forms when things burn incompletely—the residue that collects in chimneys, coats surfaces near fires, and blackens the glass of oil lamps.

It consists mainly of carbon particles.

As a verb, to soot is to cover with this substance: The candle sooted the ceiling above it.
