chimney draft

Smoke's upward pull

Chimney draft is the flow of air through a chimney, created by the difference in temperature between inside and outside air.

Hot air rises and draws combustion gases up and out while pulling fresh air into the fire below.

A good draft keeps smoke moving upward; a poor draft causes smoke to spill into the room.

Also spelled chimney draught in British English.
