creosote

Oily wood treatment

Creosote is a thick, oily liquid with a sharp, smoky smell, derived from wood tar or coal tar.

It's used as a wood preservative, particularly for railroad ties, fence posts, and telephone poles: The old barn smelled of creosote.

Creosote also refers to the dark, tarry residue that builds up inside chimneys and flues from burning wood, posing a fire hazard if not cleaned.
