chantry
Endowed memorial chapel
A chantry is a chapel or altar endowed for the singing of masses for the soul of the founder or others specified in the endowment.
Common in medieval Christianity, chantries were established by wealthy donors hoping to speed their passage through purgatory.
The term also refers to the endowment itself or the priests who served there.
