introit
Mass's first song
An introit is a hymn or psalm sung at the beginning of a Christian worship service, especially as the clergy approaches the altar.
The term comes from a Latin word meaning entrance, and the introit marks the formal opening of the liturgy: The choir began the introit as the procession entered.
More broadly, introit can mean any entrance or introduction to a ceremony.
