abbeys

Monks' religious residences

Abbeys is the plural of abbey, a building or complex housing a community of monks or nuns under an abbot or abbess.

Many historic abbeys survive as churches, ruins, or tourist sites: Westminster Abbey, the abbeys of Yorkshire.

The word sometimes names grand estates built on former monastery grounds.
