chantey
Rhythmic maritime tune
A chantey (also spelled shanty) is a song traditionally sung by sailors while performing rhythmic work aboard ships, such as hauling ropes or raising anchors.
The songs feature a call-and-response structure that helped coordinate group labor and maintain morale during long voyages.
The crew broke into a chantey as they hoisted the sails.
Though working sail ships have largely disappeared, chanteys remain popular in folk music and maritime festivals.
