tabernacle

Wanderers' sacred tent

A tabernacle is a place of worship, particularly in certain Christian denominations like Mormon and some Protestant churches.

The word originally referred to a portable sanctuary—the tent that housed the Ark of the Covenant during the Israelites' wilderness wanderings.

In Catholic and some other Christian contexts, a tabernacle is the ornate container on an altar where consecrated bread is kept.

The term can also mean any temporary dwelling or shelter: The festival-goers made tabernacles of their tents. (Capitalized Tabernacle often refers to a specific building, such as the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City.)
