Grace-conferring ritual

A sacrament is a religious rite or ceremony considered to convey divine grace.

In Christianity, sacraments include baptism, communion, and (in Catholic and Orthodox traditions) confession, confirmation, marriage, ordination, and anointing of the sick.

The word extends to anything regarded as sacred or inviolable: Free speech is a sacrament in American political culture.
