cession
Formal rights transfer
Cession is the formal act of yielding or giving up territory, rights, or property to another party.
The term appears most often in legal and diplomatic contexts: The treaty required the cession of the northern provinces.
A nation might make territorial cessions after losing a war, or a landowner might grant a cession of mineral rights.
