secession
Formal political withdrawal
Secession is the act of formally withdrawing from a political entity, especially a nation or federation.
In American history, the term is most associated with Southern states leaving the Union before the Civil War: South Carolina's secession came first.
The word applies to any breakaway movement: The region voted for secession from the country.
