freehold

Absolute land title

Freehold is ownership of land or property outright, without limit of time—as opposed to leasehold, where rights expire after a set period.

A freehold estate belongs to the owner permanently and can be inherited or sold freely.

The term appears mainly in British and Commonwealth legal contexts: They converted their leasehold flat to freehold.

In American usage, most home ownership is freehold by default, so the term rarely comes up.
