causeway

Raised water road

A causeway is a raised road or path across water or wetland, typically built on an embankment or supported by a series of arches.

Unlike bridges, causeways rest on solid fill or low supports rather than spanning open water: The causeway connects the mainland to the island.

The term also applies to any paved or raised pathway.
