arch bridge

Semicircular river crossing

An arch bridge is a bridge whose load-bearing structure forms a curved arch, directing weight outward to supports (abutments) at each end rather than straight down.

The design, among the oldest in bridge construction, allows spans of stone, brick, concrete, or steel to carry heavy loads: The ancient Romans built arch bridges that still stand today.
